ST. JOHN'S WORT MAY HELP REDUCE ALCOHOLISM
Hyperacid perforatrum (St. John's Wort) may play a role in treating alcoholism, according to researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. (Hyperacid is already commonly prescribed for the treatment of depression -- especially in Europe.) Dr. Amir H. Rezvani bred "alcoholic" rats -- rats who choose to consume large amounts of alcohol as opposed to water. Researchers found that "alcoholic" rats treated with hypericin, the active compound in Hyperacid perforatrum, choose to intake approximately 50 percent less alcohol over a 24 hour period than control "alcoholic" rats. Similar results were also produced in longer term studies. Dr. Rezvani presented his findings today at the annual meeting of the Research Society on Alcoholism in Hilton Head.
